July 18th, 2022 – Language relationships and the reconstruction of human history

Historical Linguistics gave an important contribution to the reconstruction of the human past through the invention of a scientific method that allowed researchers to detect genealogical relationships among languages that appear very different on the surface. A challenge that is still open for historical linguists is going beyond the temporal limits of the classical comparative method to reconstruct historical relationships which are even more ancient, thus broadening the knowledge of the human past at a deeper level.

Around this challenge, a research enterprise has been established in the last years among a group of researchers affiliated with the University of York e the department of Communication and Economics at Universitą di Modena e Reggio Emilia (UniMORE), in collaboration with other research institutions in Italy (Trieste), the UK (Cambridge) e the US (UCLA).

This research has been recently featured on “L’Essenziale”, a weekly magazine of the “Internazionale” newspaper, which wrote about the research enterprise on July 16th, 2022 edition (read the article here).

The article features the history and the pillars of the PCM (www.parametricomparison.unimore.it), and the findings that emerged in its latest applications. Around these topics, the department of Communication and Economics is organizing some linguistic classes for the 2022/2023 year: students will have the chance to learn about this research and contribute to it through related projects.
